FAQ about online therapy, counselling

Please feel free to contact me if you can not find the answer to your question.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy that offers clients a supportive and confidential environment to navigate and address personal challenges effectively. Central to this process of counselling is the establishment of a trusting therapeutic relationship, which provides the safety and security needed for clients to delve deeply into their thoughts and emotions. This secure connection not only empowers clients but also encourages them to explore their feelings and experiences in a way that promotes self-discovery and personal growth. Through this therapeutic alliance, clients are able to initiate meaningful changes in their lives, should they choose to do so, leading to enhanced wellbeing and a greater sense of fulfillment.

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a comprehensive and specialized type of counselling that involves engaging in more profound and in-depth work to effectively address chronic or severe mental health issues. This therapeutic approach aims to uncover and deeply understand the underlying causes and complexities of psychological difficulties, enabling clients to embark on a journey towards achieving meaningful and lasting changes in their lives.

How often are sessions?

Sessions are 50 minutes for adults, and are normally scheduled on the same day at the same time each week. I would recommend a minimum of 6-12 sessions but there is no obligation to book a set number in advance.

How do I cancel my session?

Sessions may be cancelled by phone or email. All missed sessions and sessions cancelled within 24hrs of the scheduled time must be paid for in full.

On very rare occasions I may need to cancel a session at short notice, in which case there is no charge.

How do I pay for my session?

To ensure a smooth and efficient process for all parties involved, payment is required to be made 24 hours in advance, with bank transfer. This allows for proper scheduling and confirmation of appointments. Additionally, I conduct a thorough review of my fees once a year, typically during the month of July. Following this review, I commit to providing you with at least three weeks’ notice regarding any changes to my fees, ensuring transparency and adequate time for you to adjust accordingly.

Is counselling confidential?

Absolutely, I want to assure you that the service provided is strictly confidential. This means that everything you share during our sessions will remain private and secure. However, there is an important exception to this confidentiality: if at any point I believe that you pose a significant risk of harm to yourself or others, I would need to take necessary actions to ensure safety. Rest assured, this is a matter that we would discuss openly and transparently during our session. In fact, during our very first session, we will take the time to thoroughly review the confidentiality policy together, ensuring that you feel completely comfortable and informed about how your information is handled. You may also find it helpful to read BACP confidentiality resources.

When I am in crisis can I contact my counsellor?

I want to emphasize that I am available to support you during your scheduled appointment time only. If you find yourself in a situation that qualifies as an emergency, it is important to seek additional resources outside of our sessions. In such instances, I encourage you to reach out to your General Practitioner (GP), the Samaritans (call for free 116 123, www.samaritans.org), or your local crisis service to ensure you receive the immediate help and support you need. Your wellbeing is of utmost importance, and there are professionals ready to assist you in urgent situations.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes, online therapy is readily available and can be just as effective as traditional in-person sessions when it comes to addressing your mental health needs. This form of therapy not only provides you with the flexibility to schedule sessions at your convenience, but it also offers the added benefit of accessing professional support while in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Whether you are seeking counselling for anxiety, personal growth, or other life challenges, online therapy can be a valuable resource in your journey towards improved wellbeing.

What issues can counselling help with?

Counselling can assist individuals facing a wide array of challenges, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, significant life transitions, and various other life challenges that can arise throughout one’s journey. It offers a confidential and supportive environment where individuals can openly discuss their feelings, thoughts, and experiences. This therapeutic space enables clients to deeply explore their concerns, gain insights, and collaboratively discover effective strategies to manage and ultimately overcome the difficulties they are facing.

How can therapy improve my wellbeing?

Talking therapy, including both counselling and psychotherapy, offers a profound opportunity to enhance your wellbeing. It creates a safe and confidential space where you can freely explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Through this exploration, you can gain valuable insights into your personal challenges and develop effective strategies to navigate them. Engaging in this therapeutic process can lead to significant improvements in your mental health, resilience, and overall quality of life, enabling you to face both daily stressors and deeper emotional issues with greater confidence and clarity.

How do you encourage diversity in your practice?

Encouraging diversity is not just a principle but a fundamental cornerstone of my practice as a psychotherapist and life coach. Drawing from my rich multi-cultural background and my extensive experience in the field, I bring a wealth of insights that enable me to connect on a deeper level with clients hailing from a variety of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and life experiences. This unique perspective allows me to cultivate an environment of understanding and empathy, fostering a safe and welcoming space where clients feel valued, heard, and understood. I am wholeheartedly committed to tailoring my therapeutic approach to meet the specific and unique needs of each individual client, ensuring that their personal journey towards wellbeing is not only respected but also actively supported throughout our time together. By encouraging open dialogue, I strive to empower clients to explore their thoughts and feelings, leading to greater self-awareness and personal growth.
